When a group of words express an entire meaning is called a sentence.
There are five types of sentences in English.
1. Statement/ assertive/ declarative
2. Imperative/order
3. Exclamatory sentence
4. Interrogative/ question
5. Optative
Statement/ assertive/ declarative
Subject + Verb + Object
Ex.
1. You eat rice.
2. Ram eats pizza.
3. Mohan goes to market.
4. They do not come here.
5. We shall play football.
6. You are rich.
7. She is happy.
8. Ravina is not a student.
9. She has a laptop.
Imperative/order
Verb comes first in the sentence.
Ex.
1. Come here.
2. Go there.
3. Open the book.
4. Shut the door.
5. Get out from here.
6. Bring a glass of water.
7. Finish your work.
8. Complete your homework.
9. Don’t interfere.
10. Do not disturb me.
11. Do not touch me.
12. Leave me alone.
Exclamatory Sentence.
An exclamatory sentence expresses joy, fear, sorrow etc. feeling of the mind.
Ex.
1. Oh! what a beautiful scene.
2. Alas! he is dead.
3. Hurrah! we have won the match.
4. How big the snake is!
5. Oh! it is too dark.
6. Fie! you are a traitor.
Interrogative/ question
Auxiliary verb or WH word comes first in this sentence.
Ex.
1. Is the floor red?
2. Does he go to school?
3. Do you like coffee?
4. Has Gita a laptop?
5. What is your name?
6. Where are you going?
7. Whom do you love most?
8. Why are you late today?
9. How did you do that?
10. What are you waiting for?
Optative
Optative sentence expresses the desire of the speaker.
Ex.
1. May you succeed in life.
2. May you live long.
3. May you be happy.
4. May almighty bless you.
