Use of preposition ‘at’

  1. Definite time

He goes to school at 7 am.

Our class starts at 4 pm.

  • Small place or town

I live at Kalyani.

Kaushani lives at Rammurthy nagar.

  • Indicate age

Theold man died at the age of 89.

He left the school at the age of 12.

  • Indicate cost

Rice sells at Rs.55 a kilo.

Mango sells at Rs. 90 a kilo.

At noon, at night, at present, at school, at play, at home, at sun set.

Use of prepostion “in”

  1. To indicate morning and evening

I get up early in the morning.

They come here in the evening.

  • Before year.

Rahul was born in 2020.

  • Before month

I visited Delhi in April.

My birthday is in August.

  • Before week

She will come to Kolkata in the next week.

We went to Mumbai in the last week.

  •  Before season

I like to travel in winter.

Trees become happy in the rainy season.

It is very hot in summer.

  • Before big city

You live in Delhi.

They live in Chennai.

Shweta lives in Canada.

  • Inside something

The money is in the box.

You are in the room.

She is in the kitchen.

In desert, in the space, in the dark, in a hurry, in fact.

Use of preposition “by”

  1. Close to a person or thing

The cat sits by me.

The child is by the balloon shop.

She was standing by the river.

  • Time

I shall go by 8 p.m.

You will finish it by 3.30 p.m.

They will come by next Friday.

  •  How (means of doing)

They go to school by bus.

The letter was sent by post

We came here by car.

  • By an agent

The tiger was killed by the hunter.

It was done by him.

This gift is given by my mother.

Apart from these:  by hand, by day, by chance, by cheque, by heart, by poison, by order by name etc.
